How to create page or post in WordPress?

It is not difficult to create a page or post in the WordPress platform. Before we start, I want to explain the difference between pages and posts in WordPress.

A page is intended for static content such as Front Page (Homepage), About, Contact us, etc.
A post is a categorized article or blog entry, which has a time stamp and will be archived based on publishing date.

There is no limit on the number of posts or pages that you can create. However, you should remember that all entries are stored in MySQL database and the more pages and posts you have the more time it will take to render a web page. Considering this, I do not recommend having more than 100 posts and pages in total on a shared hosting account. Usually, thisquantity is more than enough.

Creation process

Now let`s start with the creation process. First, please log in to your WordPress admin area (usually like: http://www.mydomain.com/wp-admin, replace http://www.mydomain.com with your domain) and click on Pages -> Add New or Posts -> Add New in the Dashboard Menu depending on whether you want to create a page or post.

There are two ways to edit your page or post in WordPress: Visual (WYSIWYG or in other words ‘what you see is what you get’ editor) or Text. I prefer Text mode as sometimes I want to add shortcodes or manually edit HTML code.

Add a title to your page or post. In my example, the title is: How to create page or post in WordPress?

The Editor page should look like the picture below:

WordPress creates SEO friendly permalink (URL) to your page or post automatically.

From the search engine optimization point of view, before you start creating a post or page, decide what keywords you want to use? In my example, I have an article with the title: How to create a page or post in WordPress? I want to compete for the following keywords in search engines: 1) how to create a page or post in WordPress, 2) create a page in WordPress, 3) create post in WordPress, 4) create a page or post in WordPress etc. If you want to have a good relevancy, use target keywords in the title, URL, meta description, H1 heading, first paragraph and main text of the page or post. You can use Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress to analyze readability and keyword relevancy:

How to write in the Editor?

First, move to the Text mode.

The basic logic is that your page or post should have one H1 heading and several supportive H2/H3 headings. After each heading should be a paragraph. See structure example below:

Example

As for word count per page, then a recommended minimum is 300 words and the more the better. I usually write ca 600 – 800 words per one article or page.

If you create a post, then it should be categorized. The category is chosen from pre-defined taxonomy in the WordPress. It helps to group content and divide different articles or blog posts into sections. It is very useful. If you use tags on your website then you can also apply a special tag to your post.

Categories

You can add some media – like pictures or videos to your page or post by clicking on the ‘Add Media’ button.

Add media

Please ensure that you add Alt attribute to media files and try to optimize (smush) pictures that you use on your website.

If you want to view your page or post before publishing then you can always click on ‘Preview Changes’ button in the upper-right corner of the WordPress.

After finishing with the creation of the content for a WordPress page or post click on ‘Publish’ or ‘Update’ button. You have added a new page to your WordPress site.
